This is the third blood and ash novel which is Poppys story about overcoming being ‘the maiden’ and her relationship with those around her, but mainly Kieran and Casteel. Oh of course the journal of Miss Willa.
As with all of Jens books this one hooks you right back into the story. Cas and Poppy are newly married but still on the hunt to find her brother Ian and his brother Malik but theres another question lurking. How did Poppy just do what she did and who is the traitor.
I honestly cant tell you anthing about this book without giving anything away, but I will say that as much as I appriciate the smut that accompanies the story I can quite honestly say that I didnt need it. I accept I would probably have missed it if it wasnt there, but I was so engrossed in the story I just felt like the plot was being a little delayed but the shenannigans.
Shortly before this book went on sale some book boxes promoted that they would be doing special signed editions of the books. I was sure I was going to buy the set, credit card in hand. Then I realised that the covers werent as pretty as I hoped and then the signed editions went before I even had an opportunity to log on and add them to my basket. I figured Id wait for the paperback to come out. who needs a matching set with special covers right?! Then it turned out that the paperback was going to be delayed. Well, I thought I might be able to wait a day or 2 – but Im glad I couldnt hold out.
Anyway, I guess I can say Poppy learns more about herself and has many more questions. Some old friends pop up and some even older ones emerge. The Wolvern are very much a part of the story but sometimes theres things out there more scary than a wolvern and a vampry, but to Poppy they re supportive and helpful.
I imagine if this was being reviewed for an English Lit class Id suggest the book was about an oppressed girl finally learning to fight back and owning her power. Standing up to her peers and taking control. It demontrates that women are often underestimated and that we should own our power. It also demonstrates that vengence, pride and retribution can all be powerful motivators.
