It’s Been a Minute… ACOTAR 6 was announced

“Once upon a time, in a land long since burned to ash, there lived a young princess who loved her kingdom… very much,”

I have a very valid, very excuse. With the looming release of ACOTAR 6, I realized my memory just wasnt good enough to jump back into the Maas-verse without a proper refresher.

Naturally, I did the only logical thing: I dove headfirst into a full reread of the Throne of Glass series. All eight books (yes, we count The Assassin’s Blade!) in a marathon of tears, coffee, and “just one more chapter” lies.

The Journey Back to Erilea: A Recap

For those who need a refresher too before we gear up for whatever chaos Sarah J. Maas has planned for the Archeron sisters, here is the roadmap of the journey I just took:

  • The Assassin’s Blade: The prequel that makes every subsequent book hurt 10x more. It’s the foundation of Aelin’s (then Celeana’s) heartbreak. I read it first, I know its the thrid book but its just the logical place for it.
  • Throne of Glass: The “competition” book. It feels so small and contained compared to what comes later, but seeing the trio (Celaena, Dorian, and Chaol) together again was bittersweet. That love triangle. Nehamia, that sneaky foreign princess, An evil king and visits from dead queens. If that does draw you in then this series isnt for you.
  • Crown of Midnight: This is where the stakes shift from a simple competition to an ancient, world-ending threat. We meet Baba yellowlegs and learn all about the Witches and their Wars. Celeana is Fae,and also the long lost heir. Dorian finds out he has magic and Celeana discovers an obsidian room inthe castle before shes sent as the kings champion to another land.
  • Heir of Fire: Rowan enters the chat. He think hes mean then we love him. The shift to Wendlyn changed everything, expanding the world and introducing us to the witches properly. We learn that the Valg are evil from another world and are using demi fae bodies to live in this one. Celeana (Aelin) saves everyone with her fire, when she rund out Rowan joins with her and they win. Later Aelin frees Rowan from Maeve and he swears the blood oath to her.
  • Queen of Shadows: Aelin returns to Adarlan to settle old debts. This remains one of the most satisfying “heist/revenge” stories ever written. But we also get to know more about Manon, and Asterin. Oh Asterin. Lysandra who was nothing but a courtisan early on now becomes an ally. Chaol learns that the towers are what are stopping magic. Demolish the towers an magic will return. Elide joins the blackbeaks. Aelin and her court blow up the towers, kill Aorbyn and take his assets to fun an army, Dorian is freed from the Valg collar and then the Evil kings is really a good man trying to protect everyone – he tells them Erawan is alive and in perrington Dorian kills his day, the king. Chaol is injured and travels to the southern continent for healing.
  • EOS and TOD i did as a tandem read. I didnt have the opportunity the first time. Im so glad I did it this way – totally reccomend it!
  • Empire of Storms = High stakes, massive battles, Tower of Dawn: A necessary detour to the Southern Continent. It’s a beautiful story of healing and expansion that I appreciated even more this time around, and still dont understand why so many people have to ask if they should read it. Key highlights inlcude Manon finding out shes the Cochran Queen. Her Iron teeth gran tried to kill her an when she runs injured Abroaxos flies her to Dorian and Aelin. MAeve is valge. Aelin calls in all her old allies ( this is where Assassins Blade is important) and then is taken by Maeve in an Iron Box.
  • Kingdom of Ash: The finale. I’d honestly forgotten how much this book absolutely wrecked me. Aelin is tortured but gets free. We learn that Her and Rowan married before she was taken. Dorian goes with the 13 to find the wordkey and the Cochrans. He learns to shapeshift. Chaol and yrene go to Anielle. There are lots of battles. Lysandra pretends to be Aelin to rally the troops. theres big battles, we lose characters we love, some lose their mates, which feels even more heartbreaking for Abraxos than humans for some reason. Then Aelin with barely any magic faces Erawan and Maeve. Thanks to Elides plan Erawan takes the bait and is killed (healed) by Yrene. Aelin finally defeats Maeve, in her trademark way, Clever words.

It’s Not Just the “Aelin Show”

While Aelin Ashryver Galathynius is the sun around which the series orbits, this reread reminded me that she didn’t win this war alone. We all remember her “rattle the stars” energy, but the series is a tapestry of heroes.

I found myself falling in love all over again with the “side” characters who carried the weight of the world on their shoulders:

  • Dorian Havilliard, who underwent one of the most complex transformations in fantasy history.
  • Elide and Lorcan, whose quiet, intense journey provided some of the most emotional beats in the later books.
  • Fenrys, whose loyalty broke my heart in Kingdom of Ash.

The True Queens: Manon and Abraxos

I have to give a special shoutout to my favorites. I loved Manon Blackbeak and her flower-sniffing wyvern, Abraxos, the first time I read the series. This time? I might love them even more.

Manon’s arc from a cold-blooded killer to the savior of her people is arguably the best writing in the series. And Abraxos? He is the “goodest boy” in all of Erilea. Seeing the Thirteen again made the ending of Kingdom of Ash hit like a freight train.

Why the Reread Was Worth It

Revisiting this world was the perfect palate cleanser before we move forward into the next chapter of A Court of Thorns and Roses. It reminded me why we love these books: they aren’t just about magic and romance; they’re about the “You do not yeild” courage it takes to keep going when everything is lost.

Now that I’ve finished my mourning period for the citizens of Terrasen, I am officially taking abreak to catch up on my TBR before im ready for my ACOTAR redo. I just havent decided if i go for the graphic audio to mix it up a little.
