The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I picked up The Handmaids Tale because it seems to be the hot new (old) book – and as Channel 4 are currently showing the Hulu series I figured book before TV show.
The book, first published in 1985 shares the story of what happens when people are categorized and women lose the freedom they previously had.
It took a while to understand why all of a sudden this has become so popular – but with the background to the storyline – set in America, the assassination of the president and a revolution it became clear.
We only follow the path of the main character – Offred, with the writing style blurring speech and thoughts seamlessly but not always obviously. The main plot is about a girl who is trying to get pregnant so in the new society she can help produce the future.
Its worth a read if you re looking for something a little serious, that you have to pay attention to – Im glad I read it, but I dont think its on the I’ll read again pile.
