These days the allure of new gadgets is always tempting, but sometimes, the best choice is to stick with what you already have. When it comes to e-readers, the Kindle has been a dominant force for years, offering us book lovers a convenient way to carry all our books in our pockets. The internet is ablaze with the next gen Kindle releases; however, there are several reasons why you might not need to upgrade to a new Kindle.
Firstly, if like me your current Kindle is still functioning well and meets your reading needs, there’s no practical reason to replace it. The primary purpose of the kindle is to display text, and if it does that without issues, and the battery life lasts long enough to not be an issue then from what I ve seen the latest model won’t change your reading experience drastically.
Secondly, the cost of upgrading. While Kindles are relatively affordable (and if like me you justify costs then they’re cheaper than a new pretty bookshelf!) the price of a new one could be invested in purchasing more books or putting towards something like Kindle Unlimited. Dont forget that you’ll get stung for the no add upgrade again too!
Another consideration is the environmental impact. Electronic waste is a growing concern, and by holding onto your current device for longer, you’re contributing to a more sustainable future. This has clearly been thought about in the new kindle marketing with Amazon promoting the new devices as made form 29% recycled materials.
I cant lie. I spent quite a while on Amazon. I’ve long coveted the scribe, and recently I’ve been considering a remarkable for its notetaking capability so the scribe feels like an obvious choice, except I find the size of my 7th gen paperwhite perfect. It might be 8 years old but I really cant complaint. I leave it connected to wireless all the time, I use it daily and even the battery doesnt let me down (if only I could say the same of my phone!).
While the latest Kindle models come with improvements and new features, they may not really be worth it. I dont need a sharper font or faster page turns and I think thats all thats really changed unless you want the colour version but not being a comic book reader that feels pointless.
Take a moment and think before you upgrade – do you really need a new kindle?
